Green Day commenced work on the record in January 2006 and forty-five songs were written by vocalist\/guitarist&nbsp;Billie Joe Armstrong&nbsp;by October 2007, but the band members did not enter studio work until January 2008.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The album is a rock opera much like their previous album&nbsp;<em>American Idiot<\/em>&nbsp;(2004). Armstrong has described the album as a \u00ab\u00a0snapshot of the era in which we live as we question and try to make sense of the selfish manipulation going on around us, whether it be the government, religion, media or frankly any form of authority\u00a0\u00bb.&nbsp;The singles \u00ab\u00a0Know Your Enemy\u00a0\u00bb and \u00ab\u00a021 Guns\u00a0\u00bb exemplify the themes of alienation and politically motivated anger present in the record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Green Day - 21 Guns [Official Music Video]\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/r00ikilDxW4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>To handle the record, they turned to&nbsp;producer&nbsp;Butch Vig, best known for producing&nbsp;Nirvana&rsquo;s&nbsp;<em>Nevermind<\/em>&nbsp;(1991). Critical response to&nbsp;<em>21st Century Breakdown<\/em>&nbsp;was generally positive. The record achieved Green Day&rsquo;s best chart performance to date, reaching number one on the album charts of various countries, including the United States&nbsp;<em>Billboard<\/em>&nbsp;200, the&nbsp;European Top 100 Albums, and the&nbsp;United Kingdom Albums Chart. The album won the&nbsp;Grammy Award for Best Rock Album&nbsp;at the&nbsp;52nd Grammy Awards&nbsp;on January 31, 2010.
